Our Gift To You!

The holiday season is upon us and our gift to you this season is 25% off all your holiday rentals and staffing now until December 30th.

What better to way to get in the mood than with bayleaf's True Champagne tasting on November 14th from 5 -7 pm.  It is my favorite of all their events and one I won't miss!  Call 360/678-6603 to reserve your tickets.

Do not forget you have a voice this season, ask your guests to help you celebrate and "Party with a Cause."  Have your guests bring much needed items for your local food bank, animal shelter or just make a donation to your favorite charity.  You will be surprised at how far a little goodwill can go in these trying times.

So it has been some time since I have last written, but not to worry you can find me briefly tweeting away about all things Whidbey on Twitter,
www.Twitter.com/WhidPartyGirls

Foodies take delight ... The tasty duo that makes up The Midnight Kitchen will be opening 212 Take-Out as in Suite 212 at Ken's Corner. Scott and Stephanie Pendell will be occupying JW Dessert's old retail space now that John has moved his retail biz to The Goose. This new venture will be in addition to their thriving catering business. The concept is brilliantly backed up by their fabulous talents in the kitchen and will be a take-out only eatery featuring world cuisine with an ever changing menu. They will be open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., just in time to save you from pondering what to cook for dinner. They will offer two main options with one being a true vegetarian selection, a tasty side dish and of course, fresh bread!  I am getting hungry already, get on with this venture Scott!!  Visit
www.212take-out.com for more details.

This past summer, I had the great pleasure of working with an amazing photographer, Yours By John.  The photos are up, take a peek at my website,
http://www.whidbeypartygirls.com/showcase.cfm "garden wedding".  John Chin and his partner Kim are as gracious as they are talented.  John is easy going to work with.  I would not hesitate to recommend him. Please take a moment to visit www.YoursByJohn.com for more images.

Last but not least, Envirosax, my favorite chic shopping bag is donating $1 per bag sold this month to the ASPCA to help all the displaced animals from the massive foreclosures that seem to be affecting so many.  If you don't already carry your own bags, go to www.Envirosax.com and get your latest stylish bags.

Summer Foods

There is nothing more exciting for me when I come across people who are passionate about what they do and who do it well.  Two such people are the husband and wife pairing of Scott and Stephanie Pendell of The Midnight Kitchen. I first was introduced to them last summer when they stepped in last minute for another chef at a private dinner event and these two rocked the night!  I have since had the pleasure of getting to know them more.  And the more I know these two, the more I like them. They are just as superb as their food!

Another truly fabulous food find, but surely not a secret to anyone, is Stacy and her Screamin Banshee Breads.  No one can go wrong with any of her sourdough crusty loaves from the whole wheat to the seeded baguettes.  As always, freshly delivered on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday to Payless in Freeland, Greenbank Store in Greenbank and to both bayleaf in Coupeville and Oak Harbor.

A while back I told you about my love for John Nese the owner of Galco’s Soda Pop Stop and how he could rock my world.  Well move over John, I am a fickle girl and I have found a new love with Seattle based DRY Soda. DRY Soda is a sophisticated non-alcoholic soda which is light, crisp and refreshing and will compliment most any meal and palate without giving you a heavy aftertaste.  With several fabulous flavors on the market and new flavors in development, this company is one that will be ubiquitous before you know it.   Currently, you can find it locally at Albertsons in Oak Harbor or at Chef’s Pantry in Langley.

Speaking of Albertsons, did you know that they have stone crabs, frog legs and a wide variety of other delicacies that one would not expect to find on this Island, let alone Oak Harbor !  I know you are mocking me right now, I am too, but the seafood department manager assures me this is not a fluke, Albertsons will special order most anything a foodie craves, just ask.  Now you know!

So in the wee hours one morning, I finally made it to Seattle to The Chocolate Box, for their “Tour de Chocolat.”  I was excited to partake in this journey as the reviews I had read led me to believe I was in for a truly decadent experience.  Here is what I suggest, sleep in, skip the tour and head straight to Theo Chocolate for any one for their chocolate tours, classes or events they offer.  With so many chocolate filled indulgences to choose from, you have nothing to lose!

Lastly, it’s market season and a great time to come out and support all the local growers on the Island.  Not only are you supporting sustainable farming in our community, but the fresher your ingredients, the better your results so it really is a win-win for everyone!

Some of my favorite vendors are Willowood Farms of Ebey Prairie www.willowoodfarm.net for the fabulous produce, which can be found at Bayview, Coupeville and Oak Harbor Markets as well as Coupeville bayleaf. Round Tuit Farms at Oak Harbor Market for their gorgeous duck and chicken eggs as well as their pasture raised chickens, turkeys and pigs.  Tree-Top Baking www.tree-topbaking.com at Bayview for every single cracker and crisp they bake, not to mention their croissants, Vennoise bread and other delicious sweets. And Maple Hill Soap www.maplehillsoap.com at Coupeville and Greenbank Markets for her vast array of goats milk soaps.

Honestly, I could go on and on about all the great food vendors like Dorcas and Matt of
Lesedi Farms who cook amazing African food or Justin of Columbia Beach BBQ for his grilled artichokes and the many flower growers like M&M Flowers or Joan Van Rummsten, but this article would never end.  Suffice to say, you can make day out of traveling up and down the Island visiting all the markets and villages as I indeed suggest you do!

Here is a listing of our local farmers market:

Oak Harbor’s Farmers Market is Thursday evenings from 4:00 to 7:00 pm

Coupeville Farmers Market is Saturday 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

Bayview Farmer’s Market is Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

South Whidbey Tilth Farmer’s Market is Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

Greenbank Farm Sunday Market is Sunday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

Deconstructing the Reception ...

Congratulations, you’re getting married!  This is your day, a day to celebrate, but not to go broke doing it.  Now is the time to starting making a budget and being realistic about what you want your day to represent.  Forget what your girlfriends did for their wedding and examine what you want this day to say about you.  Keep in mind what your day is all about, you and your guests coming together to celebrate your union.  In the end, small details will make your wedding and reception special.

A good part of your budget will be spent on the venue, décor, food, bar and cake.  I have decided to deconstruct the reception and explore the many options available to you here on Whidbey Island .

Location, location, location
When sourcing a venue for your reception there are two things to consider.  What they have to offer and what exactly are you paying for.  Some venues require that you use their in-house catering and/or purchase your alcohol from them.  While others have a kitchen and allow you bring in your own caterer and bar, such as Jenne Farm and Greenbank Farm.  Better yet, some have tables and chairs and/or dishware available eliminating the need for one more thing to be rented; such as The Crocket Barn, Freeland Hall, Bayview Cash Store, Whidbey Institute, and the Oak Harbor Yacht Club to name a few.  You need to know all the details that pertain to each venue such as, curfew for music, turnover of the venue, room capacity and seating capacity, parking limitations, decoration rules, as well as, cancellation policy.  Ask all your questions before you sign on the dotted line.

Another option is to rent a private home for your wedding and reception. I am finding this option very appealing to certain brides who want a more intimate setting for their day. I now represent select properties for just this usage.  I have homes that will accommodate 50 to 300 guests very comfortably.  You can rent these homes for the day or the entire weekend.

Rentals
There are three main rental companies off Island.  Delivery for rentals and gas surcharges alone can add as much as an additional $200 to the bottom line.  There is a not-for-profit organization on the Island that rents dishes and stem ware. Here is your opportunity to make a difference by supporting a great organization. An alternative to renting dishes is to purchase disposable "Bambu" plates.  They are both green and table friendly.  And lastly, I offer limited rentals to my clients and can assist you with rounding out your rental needs.

Do you need a tent?  You can now rent a 40x60, 40x80 or 40x100 tent with cathedral side curtains for about one-third less than those off-Island.  Talk about being green, not only do you save on your carbon footprint, but now you can afford to invite those extra guests.

Décor
Make your tables personal, tell a story.  You do not need to go out and buy a lot of items for your tables.  Mix and match, use what you have.  Likewise, shop dollar stores or rent some of the basics like vases, votives, lights, etc.  Did you under budget the cost of the flowers?  Centerpieces need not consist of flowers alone.  Consider using foliage or fruit for your centerpieces or have them consist of items that are telling of your and your fiancé’s life.

Wedding Favors
When it comes to choosing a wedding favor, what I have done in the past is try and tie in this element with the reception or have it be reflective of the bride and groom.  I have done cigars and mini cognac in pouches for a cigar bar, another time we have done vanity wine bottles, his and her themed gifts.  Then there is the standard boxed sweets, chocolates, candies, etc.

However, my personal favorite indulgence is supporting those causes near and dear to me which leads me to my latest cool and forward thinking wedding favor, charitable giving.  What I am doing with a couple of brides this season is placing on the guests table an elegantly framed card stating that a donation to "x" charity has been made in lieu of wedding favor.  A small statement about the organization follows to educate the guests as to why the bride and groom chose that organization.

I know this option will not appeal to all brides. If this is not for you, but you are on a budget, start now and take advantage of great sales out there at some of the better department stores and home furnishing boutiques and lock in those wonderful wedding favors at really super great prices.

Wedding Planner versus Caterer
Decisions, decisions.  A wedding planner can help with so many more aspects of your wedding and reception than a caterer typically will.  One benefit to hiring a wedding planner is the relationships they have vendors they frequently work with.  Some of the time, they can offer you preferred rates that can save you money.  Ask if the wedding planner and/or caterer get a fee from the vendors they refer.  This, in my opinion, is a conflict of interest and should be avoided.   You want to assemble a team of people who work well together and who are great at what they do.  Either way, one thing to consider before meeting with anyone is how you would like the reception to flow, which leads me to the food.

Bad food is unacceptable, good food is mediocre, so why settle for less.  The majority of your reception budget will be spent on catering.  There are a handful of great caterers on the Island who can prepare a meal that will both compliment your reception and leave your guests impressed with the quality of food.

When meeting with a caterer, consider asking some of these questions.  Will they actually be at your event?  How many of the dishes served are made by them?  Where is your food prepared – commercial kitchen or on-site?  Do they have their own dishes for rent?  Believe it or not, some do!  Is there a cake cutting fee?  What is the cost for the wait staff?  Is the price quoted the final price or are tax and gratuity in addition?

Are your costs still out of control?  Consider some of these money savings tips.  Buffets are less labor intensive with a sit down dinner being the opposite.    Remember, additional services / labor will eat into your budget very quickly.  You may want to consider having your caterer serve family style or pre-set your first course.  Offering fewer courses will save some money.  Another option is to forego passed hors d’oeuvres and offer an appetizer station or just completely eliminate this course.  Have a cocktail reception only and eliminate a labor intensive reception, rentals, etc.  Or, simply invite fewer guests by having a smaller more meaningful reception.  Then, later on after the honeymoon, have a great open house / bbq party and invite all those you could not invite before and keep it a casual celebration.  I know this last suggestion is easier said than done, but in these trying economic times, it is far better to have a meaningful event than go for broke and stress out to keep up.

The Bar
There are many choices here, no wrong one, just what works best for two of you and your lifestyle.  Depending on your budget you can control this cost with the help of your local wine merchant.  And no one knows her grapes better than Beth Graves at bayleaf.  A great wine merchant can make recommendations to suit your budget and menu.  They also can also turn you on to smaller wine producers with great product.

Some other options to stretch your budget would be to pre-set each table with wine and water, limit your bar to beer and wine, have a self-serve bar and/or skip the cocktail hour entirely.  Expect your guests to consume one to two drinks during cocktails hour, one to two drinks with the meal and one drink per hour thereafter.

The Cake
Wow and amazing are two words that come to mind when I recall some of JW Desserts amazing cakes!  When consulting with a bakery, these are a few questions to ask.  What exactly are you paying for, the entire cake or per slice?  Will they do a custom cake?  How far in advance is the cake prepared?  Does the price include delivery and set-up of the cake?  Not going the traditional route with a cake, try individual desserts or an assortment platter for each table.

There are so many ways to be creative when planning the overall budget for the wedding and reception.  Search the web for how-to tips, consult with local event planners, and ask past brides for references.  These are just a few tips to get you started.  Most of us who are event planners do not charge for our initial consultation.  It’s free advice, so take us up on it!

2009 Wedding Trends

With all the new recently engaged girls out there, I thought I would share with you some of my wedding trends for this season.

Luckily everyone still says farm weddings are in!  Good thing for us on Whidbey Island as we are loaded with farms.  Jenne Farm, Crocket Barn and Fireseed Barn are all just perfect for that memorable chic farm wedding.
If you are going for the rustic reception, you have an entire palate to play with.  No need to have a constructed tablescape, let loose and go organic.  Use everyday vessels in non-traditional uses.  A little creativity can really play to your advantage.

Also, beach themed weddings on our Island are still making a splash!  Have fun with it and use that to your advantage with non-formal attendant and groomsman attire.  I am not saying you have to go kitsch, but just think outside the box.

What I am noticing with some of my brides-to-be is the street savvy attitude of “why should I rent it when I can buy it, use it and then sell it?”  They are smart in their hunt for the items they want, often buying for far less than what it would cost to rent the item and then sell it for close to the purchase price.  They often purchase items from past brides, resell all if not most of their items to other brides-to-be.  The money they save is used for the splurge item they really cannot live with out or used towards the honeymoon.  Bridal economics, makes sense to me!

I am noticing some definite cake trends this season so this Whidbey Party Girl! got on the phone with my personal cake guru, John Auburn of JW Desserts to talk shop about what trends we are both noticing and what trends John is creating for this season!

Smaller cakes this season, not as many layers, but still very elegant.  In fact, John has come up with an amazing concept to still give a girl her dream cake with plenty of oomph, but without having to fight the battle of the bulge with the wallet.  Isn't this cake just divine with its opalesence shells and towering height?  The attention to detail that John's pays to all his creations is second to none!

Individual square cakes are going to be huge and elegant for the bride who is going for the more personalized event.  John assures me that cakes will still be decadent in flavors that will continue to be as unique as each and every bride.

My personal favorite indulgence is supporting those causes near and dear to me which leads me to my latest cool and forward thinking wedding favor, charitable giving.  What I am doing with a couple of brides this season is placing on the guests table an elegantly framed card stating that a donation to "x" charity has been made in lieu of wedding favor.  A small statement about the organization follows to educate the guests as to why the bride and groom chose that organization.

I know this option will not appeal to all brides, if this is not for you, but you are on a budget, start now and take advantage of great sales out there at some of the better department stores and home furnishing boutiques and lock in those wonderful wedding favors at really super great prices.

Lastly, my greatest indulgence trend for this season is the trousseau!  The trousseau is back and who better than D. Porthault to bring it back in fashion!  And for those things they have left out, you can dash to La Perla to round out your trunk.  As I always say, it's La Perla or nothing!

2009 Cool Trends

With the New Year come a slew of new promises of change and I for one am holding each and every one of us to that.  Change is good and change can bring us pleasant surprises.

The Festival of San Fermin which is more commonly known as “Running with the Bulls” in Pamplona, Spain was once written about by Ernest Hemmingway and is forever romanced by adrenaline junkies as one of THE places to be in July.  Well make room on your calendar boys and girls there is a new animal to keep up with, reindeer.  Fur Rendezvous in Anchorage, Alaska is the new hot place to be in late February.

What makes this festival better than most, they have something to offer for everyone like participating in the annual “Running of the Reindeer” or the "Frostbite Footrace."  Visit Fur Rondy and let the fur fly!

After many years of traveling to some of Europe’s most charming countrysides to immerse ourselves in another’s simple way of living, it is time for a new direction and I ask you to look no further than your neighbor or neighboring state I should say.  Farm vacationing in America has really begun to grow in its popularity from California to Pennsylvania and most every state in between with a rural community.  Now you can rope and rustle, shear and weave, or simply explore and relax in some of the most beautiful places this country has to offer.

Rebecca Ruiz wrote a wonderful piece on “America's Authentic Farm Vacations” for Forbes.com about working farm vacations where you get real hands on working opportunities to understand and learn how the land is worked and where your food really does come from.  America's heartland to waiting to be re-discovered.  For the entire story visit http://www.forbes.com/2008/11/19/farm-fresh-vacation-forbeslife-cx_rr_1119farmstay.html

If you are looking for something close to home or just want to make a day trip out of it, we have the Whidbey Island Farm Tour, a free self-guided tour of 18 working farms on our Island.  In addition to the tour, there are several other events during the day and night such as cooking demostrations, a barn dance and an auction.  The Whidbey Island Farm Tour for 2009 should be held sometime in early October.  Visit http://whidbeyfarmtour.wordpress.com/ for more information.

Thinking of heading to Napa for a fabulous wine weekend getaway?  You might want to re-think your destination.  Domestic wine production has increased and so has the World’s consumption of American wines.  Yes, you heard me correctly.  American wines are being consumed around the world.  Washington, Oregon and New York are the other major producers outside of California, but all 50 states are players in this arena producing hundreds of millions of gallons of luscious reds, whites and sparklers a year.

If you are ready to discover for yourself what others already have Catch Wine is a great site for information on domestic wineries throughout these great United States, www.CatchWine.com.  Let’s hear it for the Red, White and Rosé!

The world has anointed a new King of Pop and this King can rock my world anytime.  John Nese is the owner of Galco’s Soda Pop Stop  and no man can deconstruct a soda like him.  He can breakdown the subtle ingredients of the 500 sodas he carries and he can probably tell you who made it, when and where.  Long live the King!  www.SodaPopStop.com

With the new law 20-cent fee per plastic bag going in effect this month in Seattle, I have to wonder what all this fuss is about?  Most cities have adopted some sort of reuseable bag program and it is time that we all get with the program.

I have been carrying the super cute and very fashionable ENVIROSAX for a couple of years now.  Not only do they roll up to the size of a small tissue pack, they hold about 44 pounds and are very durable.  They come in just about every color and fabulous patterns so you look good being green and that is not easy!  Don’t believe me, see for yourself at www.Envirosax.com

What I like most about this company is that they really do practice what they preach.  Their giving and living philosophy is bringing a change in their community so what are you going to do to bring about change in your world?  I am willing to bet a little change will do us all some good.
